Following the rumours in March about the LG Optimus Big smartphone, LG has just officially introduced the new device in South Korea.

Previously appearing in a photo alongside an Apple iPhone, which certainly emphasised its “big” status, the LG Optimus Big has been confirmed as real – and given the name LU6800.

Features of this mighty new handset include a dual-core 1GHz processor, 4.3 inch WVGA display, 5-megapixel autofocus camera, and Android 2.2 OS. We suspect the platform will be upgradable to Gingerbread too.

Sound tempting?

LG Optimus Big offers are set to launch in South Korea on 28 April, although at this stage LG has not mentioned whether this grand device will reach our shores at any time soon.

As always, we’ll keep you posted on further news relating to the Optimus Big smartphone.

Should it launch in the UK, the phone will be competing with other large-screened and powerful smartphones. For example, there’s the Samsung Galaxy S II with a 4.3 inch Super AMOLED Plus display and dual-core 1.2GHz processor; and the HTC Sensation with a 4.3 inch qHD Super LCD display.

It’s becoming fairly standard for high-end handsets to feature a 3.5 inch+ display, which given the demand for HD movie streaming and gaming, makes sense. Both the Motorola Atrix and the LG Optimus Black come with a 4 inch display, and the HTC Desire S with a 3.7 inch screen.

And speaking of the HTC Desire’s successor, if you want to win a Desire S, don’t forget to enter our competition!
