LG InTouch Max GW620

February 9th, 2010

LG InTouch Max GW620In the couple of years since its initial release the Google Android operating system has proven itself to be a highly popular and versatile platform with many phone developers scrambling to bring out their own Android phones. That’s why it comes as some surprise that LG, a company that is usually ahead of the curve with industry developments, is only just releasing its first Android phone.

The InTouch Max GW620 is a stylish debut Android device for LG that has been designed principally for heavy social networkers and for people who spend a lot of time online. Along with the fully touch sensitive 3″ TFT display the GW620 also has a full QWERTY keyboard which can be slid out from behind the screen.

LG has placed a lot of emphasis for the InTouch Max on Android’s use of applications. Indeed, through Android marketplace you can gain access to over 20,000 apps and, as LG boss John Barton has stated, about 65% of these LG InTouch Max GW620 (4)are totally free. You can find apps to tell you the latest news, games apps or apps for your favourite online social networking service as well as many more apps being released every day.

With full 3G and Wi-Fi support you can be sure to connect to the internet pretty much wherever you are to update your Facebook status or tweet your latest thoughts. This is where the QWERTY keyboard comes in handy as, although many touchscreen phones come with onscreen keyboards, a physical keyboard does not consume valuable screen space or make the display too cluttered.

With a 5 megapixel camera you can take pictures of your friends or surroundings and quickly upload them to your social networks to share with friends. The camera features an autofocus and LED flash as well as face detection and geo-tagging. The camera is not only great for snapping pics but can also record high definition video at 30fps. Through the use of a YouTube app you can quickly upload your recorded videos online to share with the rest of the world.

LG InTouch Max GW620 (2)The Android media player has great support for music and video playback, and many other alternative media players can be downloaded through the Android Marketplace. Although internal memory is limited to 150MB you can easily upgrade this to 32GB through microSD cards, which is plenty of room for storing music and videos to keep you entertained on the go. The added benefit of this is that you can have many microSD cards and swap them about depending on your required content.

As well as having plenty of social networking apps to have fun with the GW620 is also an exceptional device when it comes to standard messaging and email. SMS messages are displayed through threaded viewing and there is also support for MMS and instant messaging services like Google Talk. With support for push email you can be sure you never miss that urgent message again as new emails will automatically be delivered to your phone. All these various methods of keeping in touch, from social networking, SMS or email are greatly complemented by the QWERTY keyboard.

LG seems to have gone all out with their first Android offering, and with so many Android phones already on the market it is understandable why. An excellent device for people who spend a lot of time online, the GW620 InTouch Max is great for typing out messages or emails and there are some great entertainment features on board too.

Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 –Not Stuck with 1.6

February 9th, 2010

Sony Ericsson Xperia X10Here’s good news for people who have been looking forward to the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10, the device will be getting a software update to the Android OS.

Originally, the X10 was going to come shipped with the Google Android 1.6 Donut operating system. With the Nexus One already out and the Bravo launching alongside the X10, the high end Sony Ericsson phone would end up having the lowest version operating system among its competitors. Fortunately it has already been confirmed that the X10 will get an Android update pretty soon. As to when the update will be released and what version will be available still remains to be seen. Optimally, the update for version 2.1 will come out right before the device launches on March.

The XPERIA X10 was originally meant to be released sometime last year before it was pushed to January and now, end of Q1. While it is never a good sign to see a phone delayed so much, this is pretty much par for the course when it comes to SE phones. Anyway, the update is great news because this means that the phone’s features will be fully utilized by both the Android OS and the Timescape and Mediascape UI.

The phone will come with a Snapdragon processor clocked at 1GHz and will have a 4 inch capacitive touch screen. The built in camera on the device is an 8 mega pixel snapper. It has been reported that the device might be coming to T-Mobile and to Vodafone as well.

Aside from the X10, Sony Ericsson will also be releasing the Symbian 720p HD recording mobile phone, the SE Vizaz. No word yet on the price of the two devices.

Windows Mobile 7 To Debut at WMC?

February 9th, 2010

Windows MobileRumours are everywhere about the long-awaited Windows Mobile 7 OS. The guys over at PPCGeeks have the latest on all the exciting possibilities that the WinMo 7 platform holds for us – the details may not be true but they are interesting to read…

The user interface of the soon-to-launch version of WinMo is likely to be unveiled during the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona on 15 February. The interface will be Zune-based and the main menu screen has been overhauled to give the experience a fresh, vibrant feel.

The WinMo 7 will come with no support for Flash – just like the iPhone and iPad. Unlike the mighty iPhone, though, the OS will not support multitasking either and apparently the app will “pause” if it is run in the background. There will, however, be support for Zune and Xbox Live integration.

There will be full support for social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter, MySpace and Bebo. This – if it is true – is a good thing because mobile networking is popular as the latest GSM Association (GSMA) figures showed. During December alone, people in the UK spent 2.2 billion minutes accessing Facebook from their mobile phones. So, yes, this would be a great feature – and not an unrealistic one either given the Facebook Mobile and MySpace Mobile apps which are already onboard some of the WinMo 6.5 smartphones.

Microsoft is said to be confident WinMo 7 handsets will be ready by September 2010.

The Sony Ericsson Aspen is the latest handset to run on Windows Mobile 6.5, and joins the likes of the HTC Snap, Touch 2 and HD2, as well as the Xperia X2 and Toshiba TGOI. What will be the first phone to run on Windows Mobile 7?

And are the rumours true? Well, hopefully the Windows Mobile Congress should let us know one way or the other. In the meantime, you can read more at the source.

Motorola: No Love for Custom ROMs

February 9th, 2010

MotorolaIf you like customizing your gadgets and gizmos, then you would most probably be familiar with the concept of custom ROMs. These are basically modified versions of existing operating systems that have been redesigned to add new features, to run on different phones or to simply give a new approach to the OS.

The legality of creating ROMs is sketchy, but it is in the distribution where manufacturers and commercials developers such as Motorola and Google have to put their feet down and draw the line. Take for instance the Cyanogen modification for the Google Android OS. Google issued a cease and desist order for the mod under grounds that it violated laws that protected the open source platform. Yep, just because it is open source does not mean that every single part of it is made to be accessible or changeable to devs.

Motorola is pretty strict with the use of custom ROMs. Using any ROM on a Motorola device would immediately void the warranty on the device. This is a good measure since custom ROMs do not go through the same quality and bug checking tests that the actual products does.

On the commercial side of things, custom ROMs are not a benefit to the original developers. While Google and Microsoft can look at existing ROMs to see what people want to see in the next official OS version, there is nothing there they will not find in a dedicated fan forum. Worse yet is that some ROMs enable features and functionalities that are meant to be given by downloadable applications.

Mod development is pretty much in gray area of right and wrong in terms of what you can legally do with a mobile phone. But unless you want to void your warranty, better not risk using the mod and just wait for new patches for your OS.

app storeIf you have owned a smart phone for a while now, then you would have probably customized your phone with plenty of interesting applications that would suit your functional and entertainment needs. Still, every now and then there are several new applications that are worth taking a little peek at.

If you ever find yourself wondering where to eat or having a specific craving for a meal but cannot determine what restaurants serve it, then you will love this app. The Good Food Guide brings the well known brand to your mobile phone. Imagine having all the details such as menus, reviews, prices and other related restaurant information all at the palm of your hands. Even better is the GPS functionality which will show you your options depending on your current location.

Fans of old school Lucas Arts games will enjoy Broken Sword: Director’s Cut for the iPhone. This sequel to the curse of Monkey Island will have you once again exploring and searching for clues and items as you investigate Victorian era Paris trying to solve a murder. If you have played it on the PC years ago, there’s a new additional storyline that should spice things up.

Vodafone Sends Apologies on Twitter

February 9th, 2010

Vod TwitThere are times when you know that a company has to really take responsibility for doing something wrong, there are also times when you know they have to fire an employee for doing something really unacceptable that tarnishes the reputation of the company.

Anyway, over the weekend, someone from within the offices of Vodafone posted a Tweet using the company’s official account. The said Tweet contained very inappropriate language. While many can say that it is Vodafone’s responsibility to keep track of its personnel, there is simply no way to keep track of behaviors such as these. Fortunately, other employees of the company have been quick to reply to the said Tweet to apologize for the Tweet and to assure everyone that they have not been hacked.

According to the update, Vodafone had a “severe breach of rules by staff in [their] building, and [they] are dealing with it internally”.

News reports regarding the incident are stating that the culprit who posted the obscene message was suspended and there is an investigation currently going on. All things considered, it is simply proper that a large company such as Vodafone follows the rules of law and has an investigation, but it would not be a stretch to say that the suspension is a lenient reprimand.

Though most are already predicting that the individual would most definitely be fired, or at the very least, forced to resign, they would actually be doing the public a favor by publishing the name of the individual and having him or her blacklisted (though according to the Tweet, the poster was male).

Aside from this little hiccup, all else is calm at Vodafone’s side of the fence. The company is enjoying its continuously growing number of iPhone subscribers and is expecting to launch some high end devices sometime this coming April.

Get Snappy: First Picture of LG LU9400 Arena Max

February 9th, 2010

LG Arena MaxThe successor to the LG KM900 Arena has been spotted online together with a few leaked details on the handset.

Bigger than its predecessor, the Arena Max sports a 3.5 inch touchscreen compared to the 3.2 inch screen on the original Arena. Another difference is that the keys beneath the screen are no longer touch-sensitive. The Arena Max has physical keys for managing calls and accessing the main menu.

The OS is still not confirmed but we know it will be powered by Qualcomm’s 1GHz Snapdragon processor. The phone will be fast and seamless – if not necessarily smart. It is rumoured to be a feature phone rather than a smartphone, just like the first Arena. So, the Snapdragon is set to make an appearance on a non-smartphone? This will place the Arena Max alongside other Snapdragon phones including the Xperia X10, Google Nexus One and HTC HD2.

Other confirmed details are that the LG LU9400 Arena Max has Bluetooth and Wi-Fi inbuilt together with a GPS receiver. There is a 5-megapixel camera onboard too so you can take snaps as well as enjoy the phone’s snappy features. A 3.5mm audio connector is also built in so you can listen to music on the move.

Additional information like the OS, price and release date are still unknown. We anticipate we’ll hear more – and see more too if the Arena Max makes an appearance – next week during the Mobile World Congress 2010 in Barcelona, so watch this space for an update.

The Arena Max will most likely launch in South Korea fairly soon before it arrives in other countries. You can read more about the handset at Softpedia.com.

Mobile Internet Users Mad About Facebook

February 8th, 2010

Facebook accounts Apple iPhonefor almost 50% of all the time spent online by mobile phone users in the UK. Yes, we are clearly all besotted with accessing Facebook from our mobiles.

New figures released by the GSM Association (GSMA) revealed that phone users in the UK had spent approximately 2.2 billion minutes on Facebook, just in December.

The really startling thing is that the number of minutes may be even higher because the data was only sourced from three of the five major networks in the UK (Orange, Vodafone and O2) – although this will be added to from the remaining two (T-Mobile and 3), so we’ll know soon enough.

In total, 16 million people in the UK accessed the Internet from their handset during December last year. Over 4.8 billion minutes were spent surfing the net from mobile phones, and 6.7 billion web pages were viewed.

Facebook easily won the most The Most categories: the most number of pages viewed (2.6 million), the most unique visitors (5 million) and the most time spent on the website (2.2 billion).

Although coming second to Facebook, mobile phone users spent on average less than 20% of the time on Google websites. Google websites did get around 4.57 million unique users during the month, though.

The top ten sites accounted for 70% of mobile phone usage and also included Yahoo, eBay and Microsoft.

So, if you have a mobile phone, chances are you will be accessing Facebook at some point during today. The site has around 350 million users and is the largest social networking website on the Internet.

HTC Incredible Caught On Camera

February 8th, 2010

HTC Incredible FrontPhotos and video footage of the HTC Incredible smartphone have been leaked. Viewed for the first time, the handset looks and sounds incredible – but whether it is, remains to be seen.

The HTC Incredible runs on the Android 2.1 operating system and is powered by the Snapdragon processor (reported to be a minimum of 1GHz) with 256MB RAM. The Snapdragon is a rapid internal processor, and it fuels other impressive smartphones including the Toshiba TG01, the Xperia X10 and the Google Nexus One.

The touchscreen on the Incredible is either 3.5 inches or 3.7 inches, and possibly also AMOLED. The resolution is expected to be very high with an excellent display quality. The mobile phone will be carried by Verizon Wireless in the US.

There will be a 5-megapixel camera inbuilt on the Incredible with a dual LED flash, which is visible on the back of the HTC smartphone. The phone will have an optical trackpad for quick and friendly navigation, and will come with the popular HTC Sense interface.

First experienced on the HTC Hero, the Sense UI is all about making the phone truly yours. The three main parts of Sense are Make It Mine, Stay Close and Discover The Unexpected. Make It Mine lets you display the applications you want on the screen, but rather than just the icon you get the details too. And there are the Scenes for personalising your days – you can create access to different things at different times, for example during the week and at weekends. Stay Close lets you stay in touch with friends and family effortlessly, with all the information shown under each contact. When you click on a friend, you can then easily choose to text them, email them, look at their Facebook status, view their photos etc, all from the one screen. Discover The Unexpected includes features like changing the weather and clock times according to your new location.

Although the price is not yet confirmed for the HTC Incredible, it looks set to impress us when it launches. We will keep you posted on any updates on this smartphone, and in the meantime you can read more at the source.

iPad Camera: Software Side

February 5th, 2010

Apple-iPadJust a couple of days ago, news about the newly unveiled Apple iPad having a built in camera (iSight?) came out. The initial proofs were blurry images of Steve Jobs on stage presenting the device. Close ups of the photos showed that there was a small provision on the top bezel of the tablet that looked just like the right size for a camera. While the specification was not listed on the initial spec sheet of the iPad, many assumed that it would be hardware feature that would be announced once the device comes out.

Looks like Apple will not be able to hide the little surprise forever. Developers who were given the software development kit for the Apple tablet recently released application features and settings that referred to the use of a camera on the phone. Screenshots of the operating system clearly showed commands for taking images using the iPad.

Still, this may simply mean that like the 3G and non-3G versions of the iPad, various variations on the device’s hardware could be present –or if the camera does not ever appear on the current iPad, it may be present in later ones.

While it’s a big rumor, the possible presence of a camera is not a surprise to many. The iPad is considered to be a quick access tool for the internet. It was only logical that people assumed that the device would be able to handle video chat among other features.

The iPad is a digital tablet with a 9.7 inch screen and the new A4 1GHz processor. The device has yet to launch but is already a well known cultural icon and has appeared on both the Peewee Herman show and the 52nd Grammy Awards.

For more details on the iPad camera, go straight to the Telegraph UK.
