After many long months of waiting, owners of the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 Android smart phone are finally going to get to wait another set of long months. Joking aside, the launch of the Android 2.1 Éclair for the XPERIA X10 is reported to be a success, surpassing Dell’s efforts earlier to bring the same Android OS to the Streak.

According to Sony Ericsson, the official launch of the firmware update will be by the end of this month and it will not only bring a new Android OS version to the handset, but an additional 720p HD video recording function will also be in the device.

The sad part of the news is that the 2.1 Éclair is far from being the latest operating system by Google. At the moment, the SDK of 3.0 Gingerbread is already out and many phones are already deep in the queue for the current latest version of the Android OS: 2.2 Froyo.

Considering how well Sony Ericsson is doing with the open source mobile platform, they are still behind the line when it comes to updating their handsets. The XPERIA X10 came out alongside the HTC Desire and was quickly followed by the Samsung Galaxy S. In both cases, the X10 was considered to be the lesser handset because it was still running 1.6 Donut when other phones already came packed with the Éclair.

Speaking of the Samsung Galaxy S, the Froyo update for the device has been delayed for next week. Despite the fact that it was already available temporarily, Samsung UK has stated that they are still in the testing phase and that the OS is not going to be ready until the next week.

With many network operators holding off the Froyo update on the HTC Desire before finally launching, this is starting to look like a new trend of the Google OS.
