According to HTC Taiwan, the update for Android version 2.1 Éclair has been released for several HTC handset models. It is expected that the update will also be available in the UK sometime later this month.

Owners of the HTC Hero, HTC Legend, HTC Desire and the HTC EVO 4G will be happy to know that the new update brings the full capabilities and features of the Éclair update. Well, the update will not really mean much for the HTC Desire as it already runs version 2.1 of the mobile platform-but it will add a couple of security bugs that originally allowed users to have root access and it also fixes some issues regarding micro SD card accessibility.

Obviously, many users are disappointed to know that this update will not be bring the 2.2 Froyo –this latest update for the Android operating system brings Flash support, faster phone performance, better browsing (technically, better and faster Java scrip support) and several other features such as tethering and using a handset as a WiFi hotspot.

With the various updates for the Android OS not being available to its many handsets at the same time –mostly due to compatibility and version issues, as each handset has different hardware specifications, it will be hard for Google to compete with the Apple iPhone OS and the Windows Phone 7 mobile platform as these devices are only used in handsets that have specific hardware (Apple uses their own hardware while Microsoft has specified details for any handset that will be using the new OS).

With the Android OS getting more refined with each version, Google is aiming for stability in the rate of new updates –they believe that after 3.0 Gingerbread is released, they will be able to standardize and update all existing Android devices.
