Orange to Offer HTC Touch Pro2

Tuesday, June 22nd, 2010

HTC-Touch-Pro-2There are plenty of great handsets that never make it to UK store shelves, thankfully, local mobile network operator Orange Mobile UK has taken it upon them to grab one of these handsets and bring it over to the UK. The HTC Touch Pro2 is a Windows Mobile handset. While less impressive as the HTC HD2, it offers a more budget friendly alternative to the massively powerful HD2 –which is a major concern for many businesses. Despite the HD’2 better specs and capacitive touch screen display, these features are not really that big of a plus for many enterprise clients.

Going back on focus to the Touch Pro 2, this handset comes with a large 3.6 inch TFT resistive touch screen display. With a resolution of 480 x 800 pixels, it easily matches other high end smart phones released today. You can easily view web pages in wide view without having the screen squeeze up the content. With 65k colors, images are rendered nicely and the interface of the WinMo OS is clearly defined.

htc-touch-pro2-bThe phone’s user interface mostly relies on the large touch screen, which comes with accelerometer for auto rotate and a touch sensitive instant zoom bar (which is pretty useful since the device has no pinch or gestures). With a stylus, users can make use of the handwriting recognition function and the TouchFlo 3D user interface is a joy to play around with.

With the Qualcomm MSM7200 A 525MHz CPU, this HTC device runs pretty smoothly –though WinMo is known to have the occasional performance hiccup or two, particularly when loading large files.

The original release of this smart phone featured Windows Mobile 6.1, though there have been rumors that Orange’s version would automatically have WinMo 6.5 (in any case, the 6.1 can easily updated to the newer version).

Orange Boston Coming to UK in June

Wednesday, May 26th, 2010

Orange BostonThe own-branded, Android-based smartphone, the Orange Boston is currently available in Spain and will launch in the UK in June.*

The device is affordable, anticipated to be available in the UK for around £15 a month – keep an eye on our Orange Boston deals for further details.* Considering the price tag, the Boston offers you a lot.

With a 3.2 inch touchscreen, the phone has support for Wi-Fi and GPS so you can browse online, access social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter, and navigate your way more easily. Among the features are a 5-megapixel camera, a 3.5 mm audio connector and a microSD card slot for increasing the internal memory space. And of course, being an Android phone means it comes with an array of Google apps such as Google Maps, Google Search, Google Talk and YouTube.

The Orange Boston is part of Orange’s plans to increase its portfolio of smartphones. By 2013, the company wants 50% of its portfolio to be smartphones and for this growth to be driven by affordable handsets. At the moment, only 15% of Orange’s portfolio consists of smartphones.

Speaking to Mobile, Patrick Remy, Orange device chief, said: “We have seen a dramatic growth in smartphones. In 2009, 15% of all devices were smartphones and this will double in 2010 to one third of devices. We expect this figure to grow to 50% by 2013.”

He added: “We had noticed that there was only one in ten customers doing that but we thought it had potential for the majority of our customers. We worked on defining segments and matching the devices with the right services and tariffs in 2009 and we were happy with the results. One of the key elements for success is we have not compromised on the quality. We are working on a handset for the UK – this will launch in summer.”

*[UPDATE- The Orange Boston will not be released in the UK, as it is to be released only in Spain. The UK will be able to enjoy two similar, but as-yet unannounced handsets from Orange later this year.]

Orange and T-Mobile to Become: Everything Everywhere

Tuesday, May 11th, 2010

OrangeYes, the merged company has opted for the name Everything Everywhere – which at least gives us an indication of its future plans within the mobile phone sector.

Everything Everywhere intends to launch about 100 new shops and grow its number of Wi-Fi hotspots in the UK.

However, when in contact with customers, the two brands Orange and T-Mobile will remain.

Tom Alexander, chief executive, said of the new name: “What I wanted was a company name that did not distract or confuse from two very strong brands. What I wanted was something that was additive. I love Everything Everywhere because it really does encapsulate the vision and the ambition for the company.”

He added: “We are going through this revolutionary step in the marketplace where people are getting iPhones, getting Google devices and we have Microsoft’s Phone 7 coming into the market soon. It’s not just about voice and text. It’s about everything else you can do on a mobile phone. People are even talking about apps down the pub. It’s not some bland name – Orange and T-Mobile Company Limited or something – it is encapsulating what the vision of the business is.”

The merger between these two mobile phone firms started in 2009 and regulatory approval was achieved earlier in 2010.t-mobileLOGO

And speaking of expansion plans for Everything Everywhere, Mr Alexander said: “We have looked at it long and hard and actually we are going to extend our number of shops. There are areas in the country where we will open new Everything Everywhere stores: they could be Orange branded; they could be T-Mobile branded or they could be a combination of both, especially in small rural towns. It is not just selling. We also want to provide service and help to customers on the high street not just over the phone. As people can do more and more with a mobile phone … we want to hold the hand of the customer and show them how they can get more out of their devices.”

Orange Goes All Black with Desire

Wednesday, March 31st, 2010

HTC Desire (5)When it comes to delivering operator exclusive colors, it seems like Orange knows how to get first dibs. Recent reports have confirmed that the all black version of the upcoming HTC Desire Android smart phone will be an operator exclusive for Orange Mobile UK. Just last week, it has also been confirmed that the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 all white version is going to be part of Orange Mobile’s offerings for April.

It has been long wait for the HTC Desire. All black or not, this smart phone has been on the wishlist of many Android fans since it was first revealed in the leaked HTC 2010 roadmap last October. There, the HTC Bravo, HTC Legend and several other smart phones were leaked and shown off to the public.

Interest in the Bravo settled down when all the focus went to the coming of the Nexus One last January, but shortly after, everyone went back to waiting for the Snapdragon Android from HTC. At the recent Mobile World Congress, it was revealed that the Bravo had been renamed as the Desire and that it will be launching by April.

The device is powered by a 1GHz Snapdragon CPU which ensures that everything runs fast and smooth. The 3.7 inch AMOLED capacitive touch screen gives accurate touch controls, high quality visuals and rich color quality. Lastly, the 5 mega pixel camera provides autofocus, flash and even 720p HD video recording.

This smart phone truly belongs on the high end category with its impressive specs. Aside from having impressive hardware, the Desire also uses the HTC Sense user interface and of course, the latest Android operating system.

Both the Desire and the Legend are going to be available this April.

Orange Launches iPhone Games

Tuesday, March 30th, 2010

apple_iphoneHot on the heels of its mobile gaming service with HMV, Orange has announced it will launch a number of iPhone games in April.

And much like the gaming service introduced with HMV which had the straightforward name of “HMV Mobile Games”, Orange’s latest offering will be called “Orange iPhone Games” – clearer than crystal, and good news for gaming fans.

The new iPhone games will include a racing game, card games and a social networking service, Playtomo.

The card games will include classics like poker and blackjack, and Playtomo will feature on mobile phones to customers on all networks, and Facebook. Playtomo will offer a range of interactive games, enabling users to play online with friends.

Orange has also announced a new subscription-based gaming service – Games Zone. This is live from tomorrow onwards, unlike the iPhone games which will appear in the Apple App Store in about a month’s time.

The Games Zone costs £5 a month and comes with two free games as well as a discount (20%) on any other games you buy.

Neil Holroyd, head of gaming services and products at Orange, said: “This is an exciting time for Orange, with the launch of these new mobile gaming offerings forming a key part of our strategy to evolve our business through entertainment.”

He added: “Innovative gaming services such as Playtomo and Games Zone give customers the best possible gaming experience and value for money on their mobile phone, while enabling us to develop our offering and maintain our lead as the number one gaming operator in the UK.”

Orange Rated the Best Mobile Broadband Service Provider by YouGov

Monday, November 23rd, 2009

Orange Mobile BroadbandAfter a tough and competitive year, there is finally some good news for Orange. According to an independent survey conducted by YouGov, it was found that they were rated as the best provider for the second time with regards to quality in mobile broadband services.

The network not only came on top with its quality, but it also got the nod as an affordable (value-for-money) provider. Meanwhile, customers also selected the mobile broadband services of Orange amongst the top-9 out of the 15 categories. Their rating also involved the ease of use for a subscriber. Again, staying connected for a longer time and perfect network coverage was also responsible for their popularity amongst a considerable mass.

Recently, Orange has been taking steps for providing customers with a greater control over the mobile broadband usage. They have launched a new application, which is going to alert the users in case they are fast approaching the usage limit. They also came out with an auto monthly bill cap. This means that the customers are not going to get charged more than the £40 every month. This can be helpful for those individuals, who unintentionally find their monthly bills exceeded, mainly due to over usage of the dongle.

Asif Aziz, who is Orange’s Director of broadband, said that it was a great honor for the company to be rated as the best in the mobile network operation performance.

In April 2009, the Dongle Tracker Survey of YouGov gave the number one ranking for reliability to Orange, whereas previous year saw the networking attaining the top rank for ‘Overall Mobile Broadband Service Quality’. YouGov also selected them as the best provider with regards to mobile broadband.

Orange Introduces Google’s Mobile App

Friday, October 30th, 2009

OrangeOrange made an announcement this Wednesday that it had just signed a multi year agreement with Google, meaning that it will be the first carrier to provide the Google Mobile app to its customers. The two companies have stated that through this partnership they hope to offer easy access to geo location and search services to people on the Orange network, who will now be able to appreciate one click access to the app on the main Orange screen. There are several features for you to enjoy, including search options, the Orange portal and a number of Google services as well.

The app is going to be distributed by the network on several of their signature handsets over a period of time. To start with, Orange will include the application with all Signature Android mobile phones, and has stated that users in both France and the United Kingdom can start looking forward to receiving Google Mobile search results, such as content from Orange’s own portal. Beginning this month, mobile phones such as the HTC Tattoo will come bundled with the special features, which include Orange’s Email Wizard, making it easy for users to get going with mobile mail.

The vice president for New Growth Business for Orange, Raoul Roverato, stated; “People want easy access to the best content and services on the Web on any screen. At Orange, we have developed a range of applications that our mobile customers can directly access from their homes creen, such as Orange TV, Orange Games, My Social Place or My Social Life and the Orange mobile portal. This partnership will also let us give customers direct access to the best Google applications across a large part of our Signature portfolio, combining the strength of two leading brands to create and deliver the kind of content people want to find and use on their mobile.”

We couldn’t agree more, and will be very interested to see the service in action over the coming weeks.

Orange Trials Asda Concession

Friday, October 9th, 2009

OrangeOrange has just entered a partnership with Asda to trial Orange concessions in the company’s Supercentres, with the first outlet opening in Eastlands, Manchester, last Thursday, the 8th of October.

The arrangement gives Orange their own committed space, which will be manned by their own employees. If the rial proves a success then the concession will branch out across Asda’s other UK Supercentres, of which there are currently 30.

Sian Doyle, Orange’s director of retail, was quoted saying; “We are trialling different types of retail concessions tailored to meet the retail habits and environment of local shoppers,” adding that; “People shop at Asda two or three times a week, so the format is different to our own high street stores or the HMV concessions.”

The Eastlands Supercentre has got 7 dedicated Orange employees at present and will focus on mobile phones, laptop computers, dongles and other accessories.

Right now the Orange Asda store is stocking a smaller range of mobile phones that the company’s high street stores, with no Orange pay as you go, in order to avoid any conflict with Asda’s offerings. Sian Doyle stated that the standard £5 tariff was working out, and mobile broadband sales were going well, with upgrades also enjoying popularity amongst consumers.

Doyle said; “The store is tailored to what we think the customers will like, but we are amending it on a weekly basis as we learn more about what they want. The Eastlands store has 100,000 customers a week, so there is a lot of opportunity.”

If this takes off there will be 30 more of these stores to look forward to – right now we think it seems like a pretty good idea; however the lack of Orange pre pay handsets is a bit of a turn off.

We Bluff About Movie Quotes

Friday, October 9th, 2009

OrangeWednesdayThis is the kind of news we love to read! According to Orange, recent research revealed that almost half of Brits, (or 46%,) have told a lie about seeing a well known film in order to impress their friends.

The amusing study shows that Brits don’t seem to mind telling the truth regarding movies that they have and haven’t seen; with the most bluffed about film being the Godfather Trilogy. According to the research, one in five, (or 19%,) of people who claim to have witnessed Francis Ford Coppola’s epic picture are not telling the truth. Orange put it best, saying that this makes them “about as legitimate as the Corleone family.”

The second most lied about movie is Dirty Dancing, starring Patrick Swayze, with one in ten people claiming to have seen it – followed, in order, by the Shawshank Redemption, Rocky, and Gone With the Wind.

The study also showed that women are less likely to pretend to have seen movies that they have not; 36% of women lie, compared to 58% of men – with those residing in the north of the UK the biggest bluffers. More than half, (or 56%,) of Northerners confessed to twisting the truth over their movie knowledge, compared with only 39% of London dwellers. Brummies seem to throw off the trend, with nine out of ten, (or 91%,) claiming that they have never lied about movies they’ve seen.

Orange’s Andrew Pearcey said; “It seems many of us have told the odd white lie about the films we have and haven’t seen. Thankfully, our customers can save face, and some money, by taking advantage of our famous Orange Wednesday 2 for 1 offer – ensuring they never need miss out on a classic movie ever again.”

Good way to push Orange Wednesdays in our opinion; interesting surveys like this are what make us love mobile news.

Orange Launches UK Multimedia Store

Wednesday, October 7th, 2009

OrangeMany of you will be pleased to hear that Orange has just opened its first Multimedia Store to the public, created in the hopes of getting customers to get involved with multimedia technology.

Those of you who at this point are still stuck wondering what exactly a Multimedia Store is should know that it is more or less a revamped, beefed up Orange store. It is located in Milton Keynes and is set to feature a large 70 inch cinema styled screen, along with a funky entrance floor made of some kind of bouncy rubber. Already, I want to head down there, just for that.

The actual definition of a multimedia store is rather similar to that of a smartphone; by which I mean that it is not only very vague, but also that it is suspiciously less than definitive. Either way, the idea behind the store is to get customers engaging with multimedia technology more than they currently are.

Anyone who pays a visit to the new store today will get the chance to have a play around with the new MOTOBLUR Android operating system mobile phone, the Motorola DEXT – which is sure to please a lot of you who aren’t sure yet whether or not you actually want to buy the new handset.

The Orange Multimedia Store is a good idea, and with the bouncy entrance floor we’re willing to bet that there will be no problem luring customers inside, then keeping them entertained – however whether or not the high prices we will likely be seeing make it hard for the store to succeed remains to be seen.

Whether or not you plan on spending up big, we would suggest a visit just to experience the bounce – if you’re embarrassed about jumping around as an adult, take a young relative along; that’s what I’ll be doing.

Have your say
