Imagine b
eing able to call a mobile from your home phone, for free. Well, Virgin Media has just made this concept a reality with its announcement of free landline-to-mobile calls.
From 1 April this year, all Virgin Media customers will be able to make the most of free landline-to-mobile calls. Yes, this offer is limited to Virgin phone customers and applies only to landline-to-other-Virgin-Mobile-calls. So, is this enough to make you switch networks?
According to Virgin Media, we spend over £1.6 billion a year on phone calls from landlines to mobiles. For many of us, mobile phones are what we use to stay in touch with people and when we lead busy lives, mobiles are often the only way friends and family can reach us. This can be a costly way to communicate if the caller is on a different network provider to you or calling from a landline phone.
The offer from Virgin Media means that over 4 million homes who are Virgin customers will be able to make free calls to Virgin mobiles soon, with the potential to reduce phone bills.
Of course, free call times vary according to the Virgin package you are on – or want to switch to. Phone packages vary between £11.99 a month for free calls at the weekend to £19.94 a month for unlimited free calls to landlines – and free calls to Virgin mobiles from 1 April.
Commenting on this offer, moneysupermarket.com‘s mobiles and broadband manager, Mike Wilson said: “For Brits who currently have separate providers for TV, landline and broadband, the offer of free landline calls to Virgin mobiles is a good incentive to bundle your services to a Virgin package – providing you have the need to make calls to Virgin mobiles.”
That will most likely be the decisive factor if you are considering switching to Virgin Media to take advantage of this offer – do you make lots of calls to Virgin mobiles?
We wonder if other landline providers will introduce a similar mobile offer, especially and as Mr Wilson points out, “Talk Talk has just announced plans to launch TV and mobile services on top of its existing broadband and landline offerings.”
