A recent report from In-Stat suggests that smartphone operating systems will eventually enter a critical period, basically meaning that the competition that is already at an all time high in the smartphone market is going to intensify even further.
Allen Nogee, an analyst with In-Stat, says; “With Android on the upswing, Palm’s WebOS starting to expand, and Apple’s iPhone not showing signs of slowing down, the battleground, and subsequent weeding-out phase of the smartphone OS war has started.”
The fact that there will soon be carriers allowing the use of VoIP applications to run on their networks after installing an app on your mobile phone is the announcement referred to above. According to In-Stat, it is probable we will see a rise in the price of data usage when a carrier implements this system, which is understandable in terms of making us for their loss on standard voice calls.
A carrier in the US, Verizon, announced last week that it was going to launch mobile phone handsets running under Google’s Android operating system which will include the Google Voice app as standard. While this might not be happening in the United Kingdom just yet, it is unlikely we will be far behind, as the manufacturers of mobile phones will be looking to branch out some of these new devices here, to a fresh market,
With Microsoft’s Windows Mobile 6.5 OS, Palm’s webOS and of course Symbian, there is a great deal of competition in the smartphone operating system area right now, and as new upgrades appear, new features unique to each system, it seems certain that the competition will become extreme. The good news is that we, as users, will likely see companies battling it out to improve their operating systems to make them desirable to us, the consumers, faster than ever before.
