Windows Phone 7 Series on the LG Panther

Wednesday, March 10th, 2010

LG PantherThe LG Panther is getting plenty of attention after it was shown off last week –potentially stating that it could be the very first Windows Phone 7 series device to be launched.

While the images of the touch screen smart phone with a slide out QWERTY keyboard was anything but telling; it was more than enough of a confirmation of LG’s decision to make a WP7 device and to show that they are well ahead of their competitors. In terms of specs, many are still wondering what LG will be giving with the upcoming Panther, but there are already plenty of speculations as to what we should expect based on the performance and demands of the 7 series mobile platform.

The easiest and most probable guess is that the Panther will come with a Snapdragon processor –mostly hinted by the fact that Microsoft and Qualcomm are teaming up for this new OS and that the highly detailed and dynamic user interface would require plenty of hardware power.

The touch screen display is most definitely going to be capacitive since the touch based controls will certainly be using gestures. Also, the UI uses larger buttons, icons and links; a sure sign that it was designed to be tapped with a finger instead of a stylus.

This recent report about the Panther has been conflicting with earlier news reports about the LG Apollo. The Apollo is expected to be a super phone with extremely high end specs and follows the basic touch screen look as opposed to a phone that comes with a physical keyboard. While some assume that the two phones are one and the same, we are certainly hoping that these are two different phones. After all, considering the initial speculations, both of these devices are going to be worth looking forward to.

LG to Release Budget Friendly HD Phone

Tuesday, March 9th, 2010

LG Viewty GT400HD is the big thing these days. While we are still not sure if the big push in 2012 will actually happen (SD broadcasts will stop in order to pave the way for HD-quality TV), we do know that HD quality video recording has now become the next big thing with mobile phones.

While other may have been busy counting the mega pixels for digital cameras, others have been keener on mobile phone’s abilities to shoot and record videos in high quality. Recent reports show devices with HD video capabilities do matter to people –particularly those who love to share and upload files into the net.

In any case, LG is now going to be releasing a brand new smart phone rumored to be capable of shooting and recording HD quality videos (720p) and still be budget friendly.

The new phone is named Viewty GT400 and this touch screen smart phone will come with a 5 mega pixel camera and a 3 inch touch screen. LG has not given new specs for the device but if this does come in at the reported £100 mark, you can count on plenty of people lining up to get this phone.

This new device is a change of pace from LG’s GW900 and the upcoming Apollo. Recently all we have been seeing from LG are high end devices with dual core processors and what not. Though touch screen smart phones will always be more expensive than GSM models, LG has been tinkering around with really high end specs that make us wonder if they would ever bring out a budget device for 2010 –thankfully, it looks like they will. Expect to see more of the Viewty within the coming months.

New LG Cookie Fresh Spotted

Wednesday, March 3rd, 2010

Cookie FreshA new handset from the LG Cookie range of mobile phones has been spotted – the LG Cookie Fresh GS290 was seen by the guys at Portablegear during the CeBIT event in Germany.

Following hot on the heels of the Cookie successor, the Cookie Plus, LG seem keen to capitalise on the popularity of the low-cost touchscreen market with the “freshest” Cookie (sorry). The Cookie Fresh is an inexpensive version of the original Cookie.

Aimed for users who want a  touchscreen but can’t afford to buy a premium device like the iPhone, HTC HD2 or Samsung Wave, the Cookie Fresh covers the basic communication features. It sports a 3 inch QVGA touchscreen with social networking integrated for (presumably) sites like Twitter and Facebook. There is an FM radio onboard, a 2-megapixel camera, a media player, Bluetooth and a 3.5mm audio connector.

LG hasn’t officially announced the Cookie Fresh yet so we’re not sure on the price for the handset yet – but we’ll update you as soon as we know.

You can read more on the spotted LG Cookie Fresh over at GSMArena.

WP7 Device: LG Panther

Wednesday, March 3rd, 2010

LG PantherLG has shown off their latest smart phone and they have got a lot of people interested.

Steve Ballmer certainly succeeded in showing to the whole world that Microsoft is still one of the biggest name in the field of developing operating systems. Despite the major disappointment many people had with Windows Mobile, MS was able to get up, change their game and totally reinvent the entire mobile user experience.

“The phone is not a PC”; or so goes the mantra of Microsoft when they presented the new OS, and from what we have seen, they are absolutely right. The new user interface looks great, has all the customizations that are needed, shows needed information in an organized, easy to view manner and best of all, it actually feels like using a mobile phone instead of a miniaturized computer.

When the Mobile World Congress ended, many were wondering when the very first WP7 device will actually be released. With MS’ original announcement that they did not expect the system to be out till the holidays, many of us geared up for the long wait. Now, it looks like LG may be aiming for a September repast.

The new phone comes in the typical smart phone with keyboard look, and many will be happy to see the physical slide-out keyboard as most of us never really get used to the quirky onscreen virtual keyboard on touch screen phones. It looks vaguely like the Motorola Milestone, though much smaller. Estimates place the thinness close to that of the Apple iPhone.

So far, we can tell that there is a 5 mega pixel camera (with LED flash) on the back of the device. Other than that, LG has been pretty tight lipped with spec details.

LG GW990 MID

Thursday, February 25th, 2010

LG GW990The GW990 is so big in size and in features that LG is not referring to it as a phone, but a ‘Mobile Internet Device’.  This will see the phenomenal GW990 follow in the footsteps of the Nokia N900 released just a short while ago as being one of the new wave of handheld devices primarily aimed at surfing through the interwebs while on the move. Like the N900, the GW990’s interface is heavily geared towards web surfing.

The GW990 runs on the Linux-based Moblin operating system developed by Intel. Like the Maemo OS used for the N900, Moblin is oriented around web browsing and makes surfing the internet so much easier and enjoyable. Moblin was originally developed for netbooks to provide quick and enjoyable web functionality and so is much more ideally suited towards this endeavour than web browsers found on traditional phone operating systems.

Unlike many phones that claim to possess ‘multitasking’ features the GW990 is in reality the only phone that can say this while keeping a straight face. It’s true that there are phones released now such as the Palm Pre or the Google Nexus One which allow you to open one application without having to close another, but none that allow you to split the screen into three parts and have three separate applications running concurrently. This means that you can watch a movie, surf the net and read your emails at the same time.

LG GW990 2This would be pretty awkward on a standard sized touchscreen phone to say the least, which probably explains why LG decided to place the GW990 into the category of Mobile Internet Device instead. With a humongous 4.8″ screen LG are certainly not joking about, and with a screen resolution of 1020 x 480 the GW990 truly does give off some impressive visuals.

Other specifications of the GW990 are pretty mouth watering as well, including the new Moorestown CPU from Intel (this will be the first mobile device to use the new Intel chip that is speculated to give the Snapdragon a run for its money) and full HD video recording through the 5 megapixel camera. There will be an impressive 512MB of RAM making the GW990 speedier than most phones and LG has put a lot of effort into ensuring that the 1850 mAh battery will provide a great deal more battery life than we have been used to up until now, despite the power that the GW990 is packing.

Although LG is insistent that the GW990 is a Mobile Internet Device and not a phone, the handset does come with all the phone connectivity you would expect of a, well, phone. Quad band GSM, HSDPA, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth with A2DP and USB are all present, although the size of the GW990 does make it a bit cumbersome for a mobile phone. This is why it is perhaps best to refer to the GW990 as an MID, because it would be fairly pointless to purchase this device if you are not intent on using the internet a lot. If you are interested in this mobile internet device then have a look at some of the GW990 reviews or see what GW990 deals are available.

Over One Million LG Pops Sold

    Monday, February 22nd, 2010

LG GD510 PopLG has today revealed its LG Pop GD510 handset has exceeded the one-million-units-sold mark since its launch in October 2009.

Judging by the speed the Pop has been snapped up by consumers around the world – one million handsets were sold within 100 days of the mobile’s launch – the company predicts the Pop may well become one of the most popular LG phones.

Compact and friendly, the LG Pop effortlessly combines features with a small frame and small price. The smallest 3 inch touchscreen mobile when it arrived on the market last year, the Pop is similar to the LG Cookie but with a more responsive screen. The interface is interactive, a downsized version of the UI found on devices in the LG S-Class range such as the LG Arena – and the design is pretty too with a backlit home key on the front which changes colour according to what you are doing. For example, if a friend calls you, the home key’s backlight turns green, changing to red during your conversation. The recently launched Acer E400 has a similar backlit home key.

The features of the Pop include a web app, a notes app, an FM radio, and pocket apps with access to various functions like Weight Tracker and Running Mate. As you’d expect on a fully-functional touchscreen phone, there is social networking integration with apps for Twitter, Facebook and MySpace.

Commenting on the success of its phone, LG said: “LG Pop has won plaudits for its innovative use of green technology.” There is a solar-powered battery cover available for the Pop, which users can buy separately. This green cover powers the phone using natural light, converting ten minutes worth of sunlight into two minutes worth of talktime. There are also environmentally-friendly apps onboard the handset such as the eco calculator which works out how well you are off-setting your carbon footprint by using the sun instead of electricity to charge the Pop.

Find out more about the popular Pop and what LG has to say about the news, at the source.

    LG GS500 Cookie Plus

    Tuesday, February 16th, 2010

LG GS500 Cookie PlusThe original LG KP500 Cookie was produced as a bit of an afterthought – a scaled down handset designed to make touchscreen phones available to people on more of a budget. What LG had not expected was that the Cookie would go on to be one of their most popular and successful handsets, selling well over 10 million units. Now realising that there is actually a huge demand for affordable touchscreens like the Cookie, LG has announced that during 2010 there will be many more handsets to be released into what will now be the Cookie Range.

The first two handsets to be added to the line-up are the GS500 Cookie Plus and GS290. The Cookie Plus is an upgraded version of the original Cookie with added 3G and some other benefits, while the GS290 is a completely new device drawing on the concept of the original KP500 Cookie. At present LG has not released any information regarding the GS290 but it is likely it will follow the same principals as the Cookie and is rumoured to operate on a sliding design suggesting that it may come with a QWERTY keyboard – although this is just speculation at present. You can read some more LG GS290 Reviews to get a better feel for this phone or find out what LG GS290 Deals are available if you already like the sound of it.

      Appearance and Screen Quality

LG Cookie PlusWhile the Cookie Plus follows a very similar design to the KP500 Cookie it comes with a more rounded and curvilinear feel to it that makes it much more appealing to the eye and hand. Aside from that it follows the same design, with a similar sized screen above the same three functional buttons found on the KP500.

The screen is the same 3″ TFT display found on the KP500, with 256k colours and 240 x 400 screen resolution. Although the screen is very much the same, the interface has been touched up with a much cartoonier feel to it, no doubt taking ‘inspiration’ from Samsung’s Cartoon UI. The resistive technology used for the screen’s touch sensitivity allows for features such as handwriting recognition and the use of a stylus.

      Media and Entertainment

The Cookie Plus comes with the same fantastic entertainment features that were to be found on the original Cookie including great music and video playback, quick access to online content like YouTube and the same 3.2 megapixel camera with video recording. Just like the KP500, the Cookie Plus can use microSD cards to hold up to 16GB of media content whether it be music, videos or pictures. The Cookie Plus also has a stereo FM radio with RDS so you can listen to the latest music as it is released.

One added benefit of the updated Cookie is that it comes with much better social networking integration. Services such as Facebook and MySpace have now been woven into the interface and with the Cookie Plus you can receive live updates straight to the homescreen. You can also link people in your contacts list to their respective social network profiles to have their statuses or tweets displayed along with their details in your phonebook.

      Connectivity

LG LivesquareThe Cookie Plus is still a GSM phone like the KP500, but one of the new additions that particularly singles out the Cookie Plus is the inclusion of 3G support (HSDPA 7.2Mbps). Although LG should be commended for bringing 3G technology to the Cookie line, the new Cookie Plus could have greatly benefited from Wi-Fi support, which is sadly still not present. There is still support for GPRS and EDGE, as well as USB and Bluetooth with A2DP.

The Cookie Plus still uses the Flash UI found on the KP500 but, as mentioned earlier, with a much cartoonier feel. The interface makes use of LG’s Live Square, where your contacts can turn into animated characters that walk around your screen and become more animated the more you interact with those people. With large adaptable widgets you can choose icons to display on the homescreen for quick access to your favourite services like the camera or Facebook.

      Email and Messaging

The Cookie Plus comes with the same great support for SMS, MMS and email as the original KP500 Cookie. There has been a greater emphasis on merging the messaging capabilities of the Cookie with social networking features, and this is greatly helped by the decision to include 3G.

The Cookie Plus is great for sending MMS messages in particular, thanks to the inclusion of a new feature called ‘Editable Screenshot’. This allows you to take pictures of a web page, edit them if you wish, and then send them to friends through MMS. So if you find something amusing while browsing the web, you can snap a picture of it and send it on to a friend, after making your own modifications of course.

      Summary

LG Cookie Plus (1)After the unexpected success of the KP500 Cookie it is no surprise that LG has decided to extend the handset into a whole range of phones. While there are many more Cookie phones to look forward to in 2010, including the (possibly)-sliding GS290, the Cookie Plus is very similar to the existing Cookie KP500. There are some obvious improvements like 3G support and an updated interface with proper social networking integration, but other areas that could have been improved as well like the camera and perhaps the inclusion of Wi-Fi. The Cookie Plus has a more agreeable feel to it and the upgrades do enhance the user experience but for anyone owning the existing KP500 Cookie it may be worthwhile waiting to see what other handsets join the range as the Cookie Plus may be too similar to the original to warrant purchasing. You can find out what LG GS500 Cookie Plus Deals are available or read some more LG GS500 Cookie Plus Reviews if you like the sound of this phone.

        LG GT350 Review

        Saturday, February 13th, 2010

LG GT350(2)The GT350 is the successor to LG’s highly popular KS360 Neon phone that has sold over 5 million units to date. The Neon became huge success for LG for being an affordable and easy to use touchscreen while at the size time having a very nice QWERTY keyboard included. The KS360 Neon was aimed very much at younger social networkers, with the great web functionality and brightly coloured keyboard highlighting this point. The GT350 follows on very much the same design but with some noticeable enhancements. The keyboard has been improved and touch sensitivity has been extended to the entire interface, and at the same time LG has added better integration for social networking services.

LG GT350 Appearance and Screen quality

While following the same overall design as the KS360, including the side sliding action and funky blue keyboard, the GT350 comes with a much more spacious 3″ TFT screen and improved resolution of 240 x 400. The larger screen certainly does make it easier to write out a message or browse online and is very vibrant and easy to view.

LG GT350The KS360 had used resistive touch sensitivity but this was only supplied on certain parts of the phone’s interface. LG has extended the touch sensitivity to the entire interface for the GT350 and the display is bright and colourful thanks to the 256k colours available. Like most touchscreens on the market today the GT350 has an accelerometer included so you can auto-rotate the screen depending on your needs.

As well as the larger screen the GT350 sees a change in design to the physical keys placed underneath, with far fewer keys appearing compared to the KS360. The buttons found under the screen consist only of the call accept, call reject and home button. The rest of the functionality is provided via the 4-line keyboard concealed behind the screen. This sees an additional line of keys being added to the keyboard on the KS360, with extra keys that provide direct access to social networks among other things.

        LG GT350 Media & entertainment

The GT350 comes with a fantastic media player with a great degree of support for music and video. You can listen to your favourite MP3, AAC and WMA files as well as being able to watch MP4 videos. You can also watch videos online by streaming them through services such as YouTube.

LG GT350(1)As well as having an excellent media player for playing your own music you can also listen to the latest tracks through the included stereo FM radio. The GT350 comes with many games included and also has motion controlled games that make use of the previously mentioned accelerometer. You can download many more games, as well as themes to personalise the look and feel of your GT350’s homescreen.

With microSD cards you can hold up to 16GB of your music and videos, or photos taken with the GT350’s camera. The 3.15 megapixel camera included comes with autofocus and LED flash and can also record video. Pictures and videos can be quickly and easily uploaded online to your social networks to share with friends through built in apps.

        LG GT350 OS and Connectivity

The GT350 is quad-band GSM with 3G connections being provided through HSDPA. Also available are GPRS, EDGE, microUSB and Bluetooth with A2DP. The only drawback for connectivity on the GT350 is its lack of Wi-Fi support, an omission that may very well win favours for Samsung’s competing Genio Slide.

LG GT350 Email and Messaging capabilities

LG GT350 KeyAs well as having support for multimedia messages (MMS), the GT350 supports the more intuitive threaded view for SMS messages, where messages are displayed per-contact rather than bundled together in one folder. As well as supporting instant messaging clients like Google Talk and Windows Live, the GT350 has fantastic email features.  The phone supports push email, so that you can be informed of any new messages as they are received, and not when you check for them.

Like the KS360, the new GT350 is aimed at social networkers and there any many great features to help with this. Many social networking services such as Facebook and Twitter are integrated into the interface and you can receive live updates straight to the phone’s homescreen. These services can also be accessed quickly from the QWERTY keyboard saving much time when you need to update your status in a hurry.

        LG GT350 summary

The KS360 proved to be a hugely popular handset for LG and the new GT350 is hoping to extend that success by upgrading the concept with a few new tweaks. While there are noticeable improvements, particularly the extended touch response and bigger keyboard, there are many phones now available following the same concept as the original KS360. Most notable is the new Genio Slide from Samsung that already has an advantage over the GT350 by its inclusion of Wi-Fi.

The GT350 looks like a fun little touchscreen perfectly suited for social networkers on a budget but would have greatly benefited from the inclusion of Wi-Fi. The GT350 will be available in the UK and the rest of Europe in April so check out all the great LG GT350 Deals then, or in the meantime read some more LG GT350 Reviews.

          LG Mini GD880

          Friday, February 12th, 2010

LG Mini GD880 1Since the launch of the first touchscreen phones just a few years back there has been a move to bring out bigger and bigger devices with each launch, to the point that now there are many touchscreen phones that are such an excessive size that companies are starting to refer to them under a host of alternative monikers, such as ‘mobile internet device’. The Mini GD880 is LG’s way of bucking the trend, an attempt to make a feature-filled touchscreen handset that is still as highly portable as earlier non-touch-sensitive phones.

LG Mini GD880 Measurements and Physical dimensions

The dimensions of the Mini GD880 make it one of the smallest and most petite touchscreen phones on the market, and weighing just a mere 92g it is one of the lightest phones available to come with full touchscreen functionality.

LG Mini GD880 2At 102 x 47 x 11mm it is very similar in size to the LG GD510 Pop. The Pop is one of the slenderest touchscreen phones to be released to date and like the Pop the Mini GD880 tries to dedicate as much space as possible to its screen.

Being one of the smallest touchscreen phones available yet still having a very roomy 3.2″ screen means that the GD880’s display pretty much dominates the front of the handset with no room left over for physical buttons. While being roughly similar in size to the Pop, the GD880 has an extra 0.2″ of size for its screen with less space surrounding it.

The TFT display comes with a 256k colour depth and very highly detailed WVGA (480 x 854) screen resolution to provide a sharp and vibrant visual experience. The Mini GD880 also makes use of an accelerometer that allows you to auto-rotate the display by turning the phone between portrait and landscape orientations.

LG Mini GD880 Media & entertainment

LG Mini GD880 camThe Mini GD880 comes with a 5 megapixel camera with advanced face detection. The camera comes complete with autofocus and fantastic features such as geo-tagging. Through the GD880’s Social Network Connect you can quickly and easily upload images that you have taken to your favourite social media sites online, such as Facebook or Picasa. The LG Press Release seems to hint that this applies to video as well, so the camera will most likely come with video recording powers, although this is as yet unconfirmed.

The Mini GD880 comes with great support for music and video playback with an easy and enjoyable media player. There is also an FM radio (+RDS) included if you want to listen to something new, and a 3.5mm audio jack is included so that you can pop in your own headphones for discretion.

The LG Mini only comes with 100MB of internal space for storing your media, which is fairly limited by today’s standards. However, this can be greatly increased to a hefty 16GB with microSD cards, with the added benefit that these cards can easily be swapped about.

LG Mini GD880 OS and Connectivity

LG has yet to state what operating system the Mini GD880 will run on but it will most likely not be a big name smartphone OS like Android. The Mini will probably run on LG’s S-Class interface or some updated variant thereof instead.

While connecting mainly through quad-band GSM for phone calls the GD880 also comes with 3G support via HSDPA. Also available is Wi-Fi support, Bluetooth with A2DP, microUSB, GPRS and EDGE. You can also make use of A-GPS if you ever get lost or need to find directions to a particular place.

LG Mini GD880 Email and Messaging capabilities

LG Mini GD880 3The Mini is a great phone for tapping out messages, with excellent support for SMS and MMS. The Mini GD880 supports push email so that you will always be notified of when a new email has been received. The LG Mini places a lot more emphasis on social networking however, with some great features such as Social Network Connect that amalgamates all of your social networking accounts into one easy to access interface.

You can access these social networking services directly through preinstalled apps and LG’s Social Network Feed provides updates of your friends’ social network statuses to your homescreen. This functionality has also been woven into the phone’s contact list, with the Social Address Book displaying social network updates for each of your contacts.

          LG Mini GD880 summary

LG Mini GD880 4The Mini follows on from LG’s earlier Pop phone that had prided itself on being the slimmest and most petite touchscreen handset available. With touchscreen phones getting increasingly larger and bulkier it is nice to see that there is a mobile phone company is still willing to cater for people who would like to have a more portable and manageable handset.

The Mini is roughly the same size as the Pop, but comes with a slightly larger screen and no buttons on its front. It also has improved features such as its 5 megapixel feature-rich camera and heavy social networking integration. Full details about the Mini are not yet available and will probably be released during the Mobile World Congress later this month. The Mini GD880 is expected to go on sale in Europe in March. LG InTouch Max GW620

            Tuesday, February 9th, 2010

LG InTouch Max GW620In the couple of years since its initial release the Google Android operating system has proven itself to be a highly popular and versatile platform with many phone developers scrambling to bring out their own Android phones. That’s why it comes as some surprise that LG, a company that is usually ahead of the curve with industry developments, is only just releasing its first Android phone.

The InTouch Max GW620 is a stylish debut Android device for LG that has been designed principally for heavy social networkers and for people who spend a lot of time online. Along with the fully touch sensitive 3″ TFT display the GW620 also has a full QWERTY keyboard which can be slid out from behind the screen.

LG has placed a lot of emphasis for the InTouch Max on Android’s use of applications. Indeed, through Android marketplace you can gain access to over 20,000 apps and, as LG boss John Barton has stated, about 65% of these LG InTouch Max GW620 (4)are totally free. You can find apps to tell you the latest news, games apps or apps for your favourite online social networking service as well as many more apps being released every day.

With full 3G and Wi-Fi support you can be sure to connect to the internet pretty much wherever you are to update your Facebook status or tweet your latest thoughts. This is where the QWERTY keyboard comes in handy as, although many touchscreen phones come with onscreen keyboards, a physical keyboard does not consume valuable screen space or make the display too cluttered.

With a 5 megapixel camera you can take pictures of your friends or surroundings and quickly upload them to your social networks to share with friends. The camera features an autofocus and LED flash as well as face detection and geo-tagging. The camera is not only great for snapping pics but can also record high definition video at 30fps. Through the use of a YouTube app you can quickly upload your recorded videos online to share with the rest of the world.

LG InTouch Max GW620 (2)The Android media player has great support for music and video playback, and many other alternative media players can be downloaded through the Android Marketplace. Although internal memory is limited to 150MB you can easily upgrade this to 32GB through microSD cards, which is plenty of room for storing music and videos to keep you entertained on the go. The added benefit of this is that you can have many microSD cards and swap them about depending on your required content.

As well as having plenty of social networking apps to have fun with the GW620 is also an exceptional device when it comes to standard messaging and email. SMS messages are displayed through threaded viewing and there is also support for MMS and instant messaging services like Google Talk. With support for push email you can be sure you never miss that urgent message again as new emails will automatically be delivered to your phone. All these various methods of keeping in touch, from social networking, SMS or email are greatly complemented by the QWERTY keyboard.

LG seems to have gone all out with their first Android offering, and with so many Android phones already on the market it is understandable why. An excellent device for people who spend a lot of time online, the GW620 InTouch Max is great for typing out messages or emails and there are some great entertainment features on board too.
