Dell has unveiled a brand new tablet device at the Oracle Open World conference in the shape of a 7 inch version of the Dell Streak.

The Dell Streak has a 5 inch capacitive screen so is basically a large smartphone rather than a pure tablet – compare it to a couple of HTC devices, the HTC HD2 and the newly announced HTC Desire HD, which have 4.3 inch screens and it’s suddenly not so outlandishly big. Add a couple of inches, though, as Dell is reportedly planning to do and Dell Streak offers will present an alternative to the Samsung Galaxy Tab and the Apple iPad tablets.

Announcing it with the statement “Of course, it’s nice to have a larger screen”, Dell’s CEO Michael Dell introduced the new Streak this week – although whether it will actually reference the Streak when it’s finally named, we’re not sure and the name “looking glass” is currently touted as this tablet’s future label.

Not much is known about this Dell tablet other than its design resembles the Dell Streak and it runs on the Android OS.

Dell isn’t the only company to enter the tablet market recently, as in addition to Samsung reportedly working on a 10 inch version of the Tab, RIM is set to release a BlackBerry tablet shortly too.

Commenting on the high levels of tablet devices being launched recently, the Wall Street Journal reports that Rhoda Alexander, analyst for industry tracker iSuppli, said: “You’re going to see a spray-and-pray approach with a lot of the tablet market over the course of the next year as vendors throw a number of products out there to see what sticks.”

Pricing or release dates for the new Dell tablet is not known yet and we’ll update you on any developments as soon as possible.
