When it comes to privacy concerns, it is simply a matter of being able to determine if something can cause more harm than good. While the concept is simple, when people’s daily lives and privacy are concerned, the argument becomes a whole lot more complicated.
This is the case of Google’s Street View. On the surface, this is an impressive project that Google has undertaken in order to provide the internet with street level, detailed, visual information of what you can find in the maps.
In terms of applications, there are plenty of productive things that one can do with street view. First off, it makes for a perfect layman’s map which you can give to friends and family when you invite them over to your place for the first time. Sending a map is nice, but with accompanying images of major landmarks and the intersections to how the actual streets look like are also quite invaluable. For business owners this is an excellent way to promote a store, the nearby locations as well as local attractions.
Students and researchers can also benefit a lot by being able to check out what certain locations look like without having to leave the comfort of one’s own home –perfect when traveling capabilities are restricted by time and budget.
On the other hand, many residents in the UK have also expressed worries that the Street View would be providing the public with a little too much information about locations of houses, security details and other important matters. In the hands of burglars and other unsavory types, being able to assess locations from a computer online would prove to be all too easy given the Street View service.
