While many hard core gamers would never really look at their mobile phones for gaming usage (it is like expecting to run Crysis on a net book), it is a fact that more people own mobile phones than other video game consoles or handhelds. This is why it comes as to no surprise that many game developers are porting their games into mobile applications in order to reach more sales.
Though most that one would expect is that only basic, rudimentary games are ported (such as simple puzzle and rhythm games); it appears that game developers want to push the mobile phone hardware even more.
Just recently, award winning game developer Rockstar games launched Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars for the iPhone. The Nintendo DS game comes out as a great port into the iPhone with no loss of graphic quality and only a slight change in the control scheme.
Players will find themselves in the shoes of Huang Lee, son of a recently deceased Triad boss. The game starts with Huang’s trip to the United States where, after a series of unfortunate events, he finds himself in the debt of his uncle Wu and has to run some pretty dangerous errands to settle his debt, recover a family heirloom and ultimately, avenge his father’s death. This top view, open world game combines driving and combat aspects to create the world of Liberty City. The game is well written, funny in delivery but has an overall dark and tragic flow.
This is not the first time that the Apple iPhone received some amazing game titles, Namco Bandai also launched Ace Combat Xi and Konami’s Kojima Productions released Metal Gear Solid Touch for the iPhone showing that the device is not only able to handle ports, but new games as well.
