The Samsung Corby series (known locally as the Samsung Genio), is a series of mobile phones that has been made to target a much younger crowd. With the phone’s low-budget price tag, fresh designs, bright colors and features that are focused on connectivity through social networks and use of media, there is that definite flavor that tells you that Samsung is right on track.

Of course, the Corby is not with its own flaws. The Corby Touch S3650 is lacking WiFi and 3G, making it cheaper than standard smart phones, but also a little less useful – a more updated Lindy M5650 brings the Corby features along with 3G and WiFi. Now, the Corby is getting another reincarnation, this time as the Corby Pop as Samsung releases the device in India.

Instead of upgrades, the new Corby will be getting downgrades, making even cheaper and easier to avail of. Instead of the original 2 mega pixel camera, the phone will only have a 1.5 mega pixel snapper. The device will also come with FM radio, 22 MB of internal memory (the original had 40 MB, but that is hardly a difference), and a nice 960 mAh battery (with about 8 hours of continuous talk time).

All in all, the phone is a basic GSM device, lacking extra and sticking to the bare necessities. Still, if the Pop looks anything like the original Corby, then it should still attract a lot of attention with its eye-catching visual appeal.

While the phone is impressive in terms of practicality of features (trimming down to the bare needs), there remains that question of whether the phone is still good enough to use. At an estimated retail cost of about 105 Euro (150 US dollars), it is still a pretty expensive mobile phone, with its watered down specs and low functionality, it faces steep competition from other devices.
