People do the strangest things with their mobile phones. This is the case when an individual uses an application for the Nokia N900 that turned the screen into a portrait mode instead of the default landscape. When the application was shut down, the N900 stayed in portrait mode.

The N900 was made to be without portrait capabilities, while it has been said that Nokia will be adding the functionality later on, no word has been given if and when the update will be released. This little application exploit is said to work for all N900 devices and will be the only way to get portrait mode for a while; though it has to be said that the portrait mode does not work so well in certain screens as the OS has not yet be officially patched to do portrait. Even without the adjustment, the N900’s faux-portrait mode looks fun to use.

Funky is it not? But the fun does not end there; apparently, the Maemo has got some pretty excellent application support delivering functionalities such as game emulators. These allow users to use their N900 phones to run downloaded ROMs on the device.

The N900 is Nokia’s first venture with the Maemo operating system. They have recently announced that all their high end device will be using the new OS instead of the Symbian. A later remark from Maemo about the migration led to a misinterpretation that Nokia would be completely dropping the Symbian OS.

Nokia was quick to clear up the matter by clarifying their continued support for the Symbian OS and by officially stating that they will use both OS on their devices.

The N900 is by far, the first and only Maemo device by Nokia. They have made no further announcements about new Maemo based devices but have said that the N-series will be using the Maemo by 2012.
