Touch screen phones have been unkind to Windows. In particular, capacitive touch screen phones are the bane of the operating system. The lack of compatibility with finger input is what probably kept many manufacturers from using the Windows Mobile consistently. With OS such as the Android and LiMo, many feel that WinMo 6.5 simply does not have what it takes to be used in today’s modern devices. Take the account of the HTC HD2 for example, it is a well accepted and much loved WinMo 6.5 device, but mostly due to the fact that the HTC Sense interface is what gives the phone its great usability.
Answering to this is need, or seemingly at least; Microsoft is apparently working on a second version of their new 6.5 OS -this time sporting a more finger touch friendly interface. The leaked images are hard to pass judgment on at the moment; but the larger icon fields seem very promising. The menu screen is divided into hexagonal grids with icons, each grid is pretty large and will be easy to tap with a finger.
Of course, the initially leaked images still have a long way to go. Recently, Access and Emblaze mobile revealed their own one-thumb touch screen interface and it looked really good and very intuitive. It shows that Microsoft has a lot to prove if new contenders like this are producing much better results than WinMo.
No word yet on when we will be seeing the updated 6.5 OS, with Windows 7 already announced for a released date next year, this capacitive touch screen update to the 6.5 should be released even earlier. Of course, there is also the point that there are devices such as the XPERIA X2; which, like many WinMo 6.5 phones, use a resistive touch screen -the upgrade would serve as nothing but a graphical change in layout.
