Satio Still in Trouble

Sony Ericsson SatioThings are not looking good for both Sony Ericsson and Symbian. The last SE S60 device just got pulled out of the shelves of two major mobile phone retailers and having a device getting pulled out just before the holidays is never a good thing.

The Sony Ericsson Satio enjoyed a tremendously expensive and equally aggressive marketing campaign that was certain to have had cost the phone manufacturer millions of Pounds. The device itself was not slouch, packed with a great media playback capability, a new SE interface design and hardware to match, it seemed like Sony just reinvented the Symbian.

So when the first reports of slowdowns, lost data (ringtones), and system crashes came in, people expected that SE would be quick on the draw and deliver a much needed fix or update that would solve the problem.

So far it has been a couple of weeks and despite the faith of Sony Ericsson’s Marketing Department in the technical capabilities of their company, no good news is still in sight.

Carphone Warehouse and Phones4U are big names in the mobile retail industry. Some UK carriers even list the Carphone and Phones4U rates for their devices on their own official websites. With the Satio no longer available on those two, it is a surprise that smaller stores have not done the same. Regardless, this has not been good for the sale of the Satio.

Also, this is the second device that uses the Symbian OS to get pulled out. A little while back, the sales of Nokia N97 also got suspended due to major software issues. While the problems of the N97 and the Satio were different in the specific nature, the general notion that the S60 is a shaky little OS is slowly being engraved in the public mind.

Even worse is for Symbian is the recent fuss about Nokia supposedly dropping the OS for Maemo. Sony Ericsson on the other hand has been having a generally bad business year as they have recently closed several locations recently.
