It’s interesting to note that the word Genio among Spanish speaking countries mean Genius. Samsung took the word to brand its Samsung Genio line in the UK starting with the Genio Touch, Launched just a month back. It’s known by another name outside of the UK as Corby.
Now, the Korean mobile phone giant is foregoing the touchscreen form factor with another Blackberry-esque mobile phone under the same Genio line, the Samsung Genio Qwerty or the Samsung B3210. But unlike the very still upper lipped Blackberry, this one has half its body literally pointed to the youthful market segment.
One can say that if Blackberry had any childhood, it would look like this. It comes with interchangeable back covers of varying colors starting with vibrant yellow – a feature that appeals to the young. Other colors should come out soon enough.
Affordable Social Networker
Mobile phone makers know the social networking markets and are only too keen to imbue their handsets with this feature. The Genio Qwerty is no different with an all-out support for the ubiquitous Facebook with instant access on its homescreen. As a social networking device, you need a good messaging tool that can go email, text and instant messaging on the fly.
Again, the Genio Qwerty won’t disappoint here as it is focused on the messaging functions as its reason for existence. The full QWERTY keyboard is a great facility for typing in your messages and is more suited messaging than calling.
Modest Features
For sure this is no Blackberry handset even in features. It just looks like one from a distance. As a messaging phone, it does the job, just don’t surf the net with it unless you don’t mind waiting for sites to appear. It’s not 3G, so there’s no high speed internet connectivity that is now pretty much standard among handsets sporting the Blackberry look.
It’s your basic quad band GSM/EDGE/GPRS on the 2G network. Samsung has obviously pulled back on the punches to bring the Genio to a level of affordability that covers the widest markets possible.
Samsung is less than open about its technical details but it may just be too early at this time to release the official technical data sheet. But product leaks on the net reveal that The Genio Qwerty sports a smallish 2.2-inch TFT LCD screen with QVGA resolution while the camera gets a modest 2.0 megapixel resolution with video recording.
Internal memory is just 37MB but you get a microSD memory expansion support for up to 8GB. Its multimedia features start with music and video players that support a host of a file formats popular in the market. Then there’s stereo FM radio if get tired of the player.
Availability
Targeted to hit UK markets late October, the Samsung Genio Qwerty will be available from mobile network provider Orange. Tariff rates have yet to be released but should be out soon enough in time for the holiday shopping. Its Blackberry looks can mislead anyone that it’s an expensive handset. But expect this to come free with a brief contract with Orange as it is a budget phone based on its modest feature set.
