Basic 3G Phone that Works: the Acer beTouch E200

October 29th, 2009 by Simon

Acer beTouch E200The Acer beTouch E200 is a simple 3G smart phone with a slide out keypad, TFT touch screen and decent features. It is not the fastest or most powerful smart phone out there, nor is it a conveniently small device; what the beTouch E200 has going for it is sensibility. This is a great mobile phone because it has practical features, an ergonomic design, a decent operating system and most importantly, it looks good. Discretely stylish would be the most appropriate term. There is nothing about the beTouch E200 that is remarkably different regarding how it looks, but the overall design is hard not to appreciate. If Acer gives us more choice with the color, that would make it all the more better. Unlike the E100 and E101 of the same beTouch series, the E200 is not limited to a resistive touch screen display. Instead, it has a neat, slide out keypad that users can quickly access anytime, anywhere.

The Slide Out Keypad Design

The charm of slide out keypad lies in the phone’s overall composition. There are device that truly look good with a keypad, and there are those that do not make any design sense at all. Secret lies in the subtle metallic lines that follow the lower grooves of the mobile phone. These accents are repeated in the keypad layout itself creating a sense of balance and uniformity in design. The presence of a physical keypad makes a lot of difference in how well you can use a mobile phone. The slide out feature also keeps the display a lot larger since the face of the device does not have to fit in both the keypad and the screen together.

The beTouch E200 Specs

The 3 inch display is smaller than most smart phones, but that’s to its size, the overall length of the E200 is kept at a comfortable 53.5mm. It can display resolutions of up to 240 x 400 pixels and can show 65k colours. It runs Windows Mobile 6.5 (you know that by now) and is powered by as Qualcomm MSM 7225 528 MHz processor. These are similar to the specs of the beTouch 100 series. The E200 sports a nice 3.15 mega pixel camera that can capture 2048 x 1536 pixels. Hopefully the E200 will have auto focus or LED flash. There is no 3.5mm audio jack so you will have to do your listening with compatible Bluetooth devices. The Windows Mobile software has pre-installed applications for email and documents such as Pocket Office and OutLook mobile. It also has Windows Media Player Mobile that is compatible with music formats MP3, WMA, eAAC+, and WAV files; compatible video files are those in MP4, WMV, H.264 and H.263 encoding. The device also features A-GPS support though no confirmed applications for this hardware are currently running. Connecting to networks is easy, just jump in and find the network you need to access, be it through GPRS, 3G HSDPA and even EDGE. The E200 ensures that users have an option.

Why it Works

Despite being a low-tier 3G phone, the E200 is quite marketable since it still manages to be very functional, it is the very problem that other low-tier 3G phones fail to address. Most low spec 3G mobile devices are not practically designed. With the E200, Acer combines a good camera, decent storage, and great phone design for attracting people and it is a fast and efficient mobile device. This slim slide out phone looks great with almost any clothing design and accessory thanks. GSM users who are looking for a new 3G phone will certainly want to try the beTouch E200.
